NG Lap Seng was also said to be a friend of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. According to scmp.com, on 31st March 2018, Ng was convicted on all six counts he faced, including bribery, money laundering and corruption, after a four-week trial and less than a day of jury deliberations. The US government on Friday asked a judge to sentence Macau billionaire Ng Lap Seng to more than six years in prison, after his conviction last July for bribing two UN ambassadors to help him build a multibillion-dollar conference centre. At the time, Prosecutors made their request in a filing with the US District Court in Manhattan, and also sought a US$2 million fine. The request came four weeks after Ng’s lawyers urged that their 69-year-old client be sentenced to time served and allowed to return to his family in China. Lawyers for Ng did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Ng’s sentencing by US District Judge Vernon Broderick was scheduled for May 11, when the Billionaire Chinese real estate developer was sentenced to four years in prison for bribing diplomats, including a former UN president, to build a multibillion-dollar conference center in Macau. Lap Seng 69, paid bribes to officials in what was the worst corruption case at the United Nations since the Iraqi oil-for-food scandal more than 20 years ago, according to the New York Times. He will forfeit $1.5 million – that represents the assets used in his crimes – and pay a $1 million fine, according to the Times. “Billionaire Ng Lap Seng corrupted the highest levels of the United Nations in pursuit of a multibillion-dollar real estate deal in Macau/” Geoffrey Berman, interim US attorney for New York’s Southern District, said in a statement. “Ng exploited a center for international diplomacy as an instrument for his greedy intentions.
